The facet joints make up the major articulation points in the spine. These joints can become very painful when irritated or when inflamed. Research has shown that most lower back pain can be due to inflammation of the facet joint. A facet joint injection can be performed to alleviate pain and inflammation.
Prior to commencing with the procedure, the doctor injects a local anesthetic to desensitize the skin and tissue on top of the facet joint. A fluoroscope is used to ensure that needle is placed accurately within the facet joint. Following the careful validation of the needles position, a steroid-anesthetic medication is injected. A single or multiple facet joint may be treated at the same time.
